After months of legal wrangling, a former women’s basketball coach at California State University at Fresno who said she was fired in 2005 because of sex discrimination has reached a $9-million settlement with the university, The Fresno Bee reported today.
The coach, Stacy Johnson-Klein, said she had lost her job because she advocated for more opportunities for female athletes at Fresno State. Her case followed two others in which Fresno State faced multimillion-dollar verdicts or settlements for sex discrimination against female athletics officials.
In December a Fresno County jury awarded Ms. Johnson-Klein a record $19.1-million, a verdict that the university appealed. Two months later, a judge reduced the amount to $6.6-million, and Ms. Johnson-Klein accepted that judgment. Despite the reduction in the award, the university appealed that ruling as well, seeking a new trial.
For now, at least, the battle appears to be over. —Libby Sander
