Free Speech for Professors: 2 Court Rulings Sound New Alarms
Federal-court rulings on issues of academic freedom and faculty speech are virtually impossible to predict, as two recent appellate rulings indicate. In mid-April, one circuit court held that a state-university professor had no First Amendment right to refuse an administrative demand to change a grade. Less than a week earlier, another appeals court ruled that a faculty member's free speech had been abridged when his former department chairman allegedly tore down fliers announcing a lecture
