Fred Thompson, a Republican former U.S. senator from Tennessee, announced today that he has dropped out of the race for president.
As a candidate he failed to lay out many detailed plans for higher education, although he said his experience as a young father who had worked his way through college left him with the lasting belief that the federal government has a role to play in helping students afford college.
Before entering the race, he had a lot to say about college topics in commentaries he provided for ABC News Radio in the first half of 2007.
In The Fred Thompson Report, he lamented that “political correctness has crept into the halls of academia,” urged the nation to pay more attention to a shortage of nurses, and said responsible adults should be allowed to carry weapons on college campuses to protect themselves.
