Foundation and mtvU Team Up on Student-Oriented Mental-Health Messages

The Jed Foundation, a nonprofit suicide-prevention group, is teaming up with mtvU, a campus cable network, to raise awareness of mental-health issues among college students. Beginning November 8, mtvU plans to start showing a series of 11 public-service announcements informing students of the warning signs of depression, and encouraging them to seek professional counseling services, the foundation announced on Friday.

In addition, mtvU and the Jed Foundation plan to start a mental-health Web site, which will feature the foundation’s online anonymous self-screening tool for depression, ULifeline. Joanna Locke, a spokeswoman for the Jed Foundation, estimated that the public-service spots — which will be shown on mtvU’s 750 member campuses — and the interactive Web site will reach 11 million college students.
