Former U. of Memphis Student Pleads Guilty to Fraud, Concluding Terrorism Investigation
Mahmoud Maawad, a former student at the University of Memphis and two New Jersey community colleges, pleaded guilty last week to felony wire fraud.
Last fall, while enrolled as a freshman at Memphis, Mr. Maawad was arrested for wire fraud against a pilot's-supply company and for the fraudulent use of a Social Security number. A native of Egypt, he had been in the United States illegally since 1999, when his temporary visitor's visa expired.
