Former Soccer Coach Sues U. of Nevada at Reno

The former women’s soccer coach at the University of Nevada at Reno has sued the university, charging that officials fired her in retaliation for speaking out about alleged discrimination against her players, the Associated Press reports.

In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Washoe County District Court, Terri Patraw claims university officials violated NCAA regulations and discriminated against players on the women’s soccer team. After complaining about those alleged violations, Ms. Patraw said, she was dismissed in late August without a reason, the AP reported.

Nevada athletics officials could not be reached immediately for comment on Friday.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of a $3.5-million settlement and a $5.85-million jury verdict in two separate sex-discrimination lawsuits brought by a former athletics official and a former coach, respectively, against one of Nevada’s rivals, California State University at Fresno.

Last year, during Ms. Patraw’s third season, she coached the women’s soccer team to its most successful record ever. Nevada defeated Fresno State, 4-2, in penalty kicks to win the 2006 Western Athletic Conference title and made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament before losing to Stanford in the first round. —Libby Sander
