Former Player on Women's Basketball Team Settles Bias Lawsuit Against Penn State

A former women’s basketball player at Pennsylvania State University has settled a discrimination complaint against the university and two of its employees, Penn State announced today.

The player, Jennifer E. Harris, asserted in a December 2005 complaint that the women’s basketball coach, Rene Portland, had discriminated against her by claiming that she was a lesbian and trying to force her off the team. Ms. Harris, who is not gay, has since transferred to James Madison University.

In a statement released today, Penn State said it had come to an “amicable settlement” in the dispute between the former player, the coach, and Timothy Curley, the university’s athletics director, who was also named in the lawsuit. The terms of the agreement are confidential.

Penn State, Mr. Curley, and Ms. Portland have disputed the former player’s allegations and denied any liability, the statement said. Last year, however, Penn State fined Ms. Portland $10,000 for violating the university’s nondiscrimination policy. In an investigation, the university found that the coach had mistreated Ms. Harris.

Ms. Portland said the accusations against her were false and called the university’s investigation “flawed.”
