A student who was wounded in the shootings at Kent State University, 37 years ago this week, is urging the federal government to reopen its investigation of the tragedy, in which four students were shot to death by Ohio National Guardsmen during an antiwar protest. According to the Associated Press, Alan Canfora, who was shot in the right wrist, says a previously overlooked audio recording of the shootings seems to contain the sound of an order to fire. Mr. Canfora says the key words are: “Right here! Get set! Point! Fire!”
Investigations at the time of the 1970 incident did not conclude whether the guardsmen had been told to fire, or had shot accidentally, in panic, or to follow their comrades. Eight guardsmen were acquitted, and no one was ever held responsible for the deaths. The troops had been sent to Kent State by Gov. James A. Rhodes, who the day before the shootings called the protesters “worse than the Brownshirts and the Communist element.” Mr. Canfora said he would release copies of the recording on Tuesday. —Andrew Mytelka
