Forgoing Pay Raises for the Good of the System

Sixty-six professors and administrators at North Carolina Central University have each declined a $625 salary increase to help plug a hole in the state's budget.

By giving up the raises, which were awarded to every public employee in the state this year, the professors and administrators will allow the university to save about $41,000. The institution has been ordered to cut $1.6-million by the University of North Carolina system. Over all, the 16-campus system must slash $43-million,
