Forging Tomorrow's Artisans
Intent amid the din of the shops and the sweet scent of coal smoke, Emily Waugh holds a half-finished shutter dog in the bright fire of her forge, watching until it glows yellow-hot. Then, with tongs, she carries it a few steps to her anvil and sets about hammering a shoulder into it, flattening and widening the iron where she plans to punch a hole. The hole will accommodate a spike with which the curlicue-tailed shutter dog can be attached to a brick wall, holding a shutter open or pivoting
