For the Summer, Berkeley Bars Students From SARS-Affected Areas

The University of California at Berkeley has barred from its summer session any students from China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan, citing concerns about severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. The university is apparently the first major institution to have adopted such a policy.

Other colleges in the United States have begun asking potential visitors from SARS-affected countries to stay away from commencement activities, even if they are family members of graduating
