The University of Southern California is said to have a side job for the celebrity athlete David Beckham, who is joining Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy next month. It wants him to lecture on how soccer can change the world, The Sunday Times of London reported. The speaking gig would be part of a global seminar on the role of sport in diplomacy next year. Nicholas J. Cull, the British-born professor of public diplomacy who is organizing the seminar, said that people who don’t follow the sport “don’t appreciate what a globally significant figure Beckham is.” —Charles Huckabee
