For Serious Publishing, How Good Were the Good Old Days?
For some years now, I have been a critic of the changes in the world of commercial publishing, and a number of people have asked me whether my memories of the past are too rosy. Do I just imagine a time when publishing houses produced infinitely better work than they do today?
I have been in publishing for more than 40 years, but to check my own recollections I went to the New York Public Library and pulled out spring catalogs from three major publishers --
