For Mottos, Short Is Sweet
To the Editor:
Latin remains pithy for the few who remember any of it ("Your (Lame) Slogan Here," The Chronicle, November 23). The motto of my alma mater, the University of British Columbia, has always been tuum est, which means both "it is yours" (i.e., belonging to students, faculty members, and the public) and "it is up to you" (i.e., to take advantage of the opportunity, to make something of what the commonwealth has offered).
