Florida A&M Fires Its President, Blaming Missteps and Miscalculation

The Florida A&M University Board of Trustees voted last week to fire the institution's president, Fred Gainous, blaming financial miscues and rifts with alumni, faculty members, and students.

In a three-hour meeting filled with shouting and heated debate, the trustees voted 9 to 4 to end Mr. Gainous's presidency on January 1, 2005, although they tacked on an amendment that would allow him to stay if the board voted unanimously to reverse itself before then. Board members said
