Figuring Out Grade Inflation
To the Editor:
Come on, how many deans does it take to figure out grade inflation ("Just Say 'A': Grade Inflation Undergoes Reality Check," The Chronicle, September 5)? Do they really need a blue-ribbon committee of deans at Florida State University to figure out why, for instance, as in the cited example, mathematics failure rates have dropped from 27 percent to 10 percent in the last 10 years?
