A fight between two female students at a weekend basketball game became a melee at Oakwood College, a historically black, Seventh-day Adventist institution in Huntsville, Ala., the Associated Press reported.
“It was a major event,” a spokesman for the Huntsville police told the AP. Two officers were injured and 15 students were arrested after hundreds of people surrounded a police car, hitting and rocking it, the AP said.
The Huntsville Times confirmed the arrests of at least two students; both were charged with assault and one with resisting arrest as well.
The college, which released a statement saying it was “deeply concerned about the reported altercations,” held a closed-door meeting on Sunday to discuss the incident, the newspaper reported. Students at the meeting were told not to talk to reporters afterward, it said. —Sara Lipka
