Kentucky officials have resolved a dispute over the political composition of public-university governing boards, the Associated Press reports.
Gregory D. Stumbo, then the state’s attorney general, last year sued Ernie Fletcher, then the governor, over his trustee appointments. Mr. Stumbo, a Democrat, accused Mr. Fletcher of illegally stacking the boards with his fellow Republicans. While Kentucky law requires proportional representation on the boards, 33 of Mr. Fletcher’s 50 appointments were Republicans.
Kentucky’s new governor, Steve Beshear, a Democrat, announced on Monday that the lawsuit had been settled. Governor Beshear said he planned to restore balance on the boards through his appointments over the next two years. —Paul Fain
