A dozen female students sued Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, asserting that the institution’s decision to eliminate their sports teams was a violation of Title IX, the federal gender-equity law, the Associated Press reported today. All of the plaintiffs are freshmen and sophomores who chose to attend Slippery Rock in part to play the sports that are on the chopping block. The university said that it was cutting the teams to save money, that men’s teams were being eliminated as well, and that Title IX’s requirements were taken into account in the plan.
