Federal Spending on Research Trailed Inflation in 2006

Federal spending for academic research and development fell in the 2005-6 fiscal year, after adjusting for inflation, for the first time in nearly 25 years, the National Science Foundation said in a report released last week. However, total expenditures rose after inflation, driven by a large leap in spending by universities themselves.
