For the University of Alabama, Daniel A. Moore's colorful paintings of Crimson Tide football players are a case of art imitating life—just a bit too accurately.

For nearly five years, the university has sparred in court with Mr. Moore, a sports artist, over his realistic paintings of Alabama athletes.
