Federal Judge Says Recording Industry May Not Sue Alleged Music Pirates En Masse
A federal judge has ruled that the Recording Industry Association of America cannot use a single lawsuit to jointly accuse hundreds of individuals of music piracy. The decision could force the recording industry to shift to more costly measures in its effort to fight illegal file sharing.
The ruling represents the first major obstacle to the RIAA's latest tactic of requesting subpoenas for information about "John Doe" defendants identified only by their computers' Internet Protocol
