What changes when one of the nation's most-prominent professors of African-American studies learns that he is at least half white and part Jewish? Not a whole lot.
The information surprised Henry Louis Gates Jr., chairman of the department of African and African-American studies at Harvard University. It was presented during a four-part television program Mr. Gates produced called African American Lives. The program aired in February on PBS.
