Faculty Strike Ends in Israel After 3-Month Walkout

Israeli lecturers ended a nearly three-month-long strike today after the government agreed to a 24-percent pay raise over the next three years, Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, reported this morning.

The agreement, which followed negotiations that continued overnight Thursday, was proposed by the head of the labor federation Histadrut. The lecturers may have been spurred to accept the deal by university presidents’ threats earlier in the week to cancel classes for the semester if professors didn’t head back to work soon. —Beth McMurtrie
