Faculty Strike Closes Makerere U.
Makerere University, Uganda's premier higher-education institution, was shut indefinitely last week and its 30,000 students were sent home after the faculty union rejected calls by the government to end a strike that began November 1.
More than 1,000 professors and lecturers are demanding a pay increase and a salary supplement that government officials say the country cannot afford. About 200 medical students have joined the walkout.
