Faculty Senate Calls for Southern Illinois U. President to Quit Over Plagiarism

The Faculty Senate at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to call for the resignation of the university’s president, Glenn Poshard, for his role in an embarrassing plagiarism scandal, the Chicago Tribune reported today.

The 45-to-5 vote, which followed a faculty petition seeking Mr. Poshard’s resignation, came a week after a faculty panel at the university found that Mr. Poshard had committed “inadvertent plagiarism” in portions of his master’s and doctoral theses, and recommended that he be permitted to correct the theses and keep his job.

A university official criticized the vote. “It is disappointing that a more deliberative effort was not made to understand the well-reasoned decision reached by the faculty review committee which, during a lengthy adjudication proceeding, ruled out a recommendation of resignation,” said David Gross, a university spokesman. —Paula Wasley
