Faculty Project at Stanford Aims to Foster Work-Life Balance With 'Banking System'

During the final months before giving birth to her second child, Jane Cheun Tan crammed in as many on-call nights as she could so she wouldn't feel guilty about taking a maternity leave.

Even though her male colleagues at Stanford Medical School were supportive, she still felt she would be imposing on them when they had to pick up the slack during her four-month paid leave.

"Medicine requires teamwork," says Dr. Tan, an associate professor of nephrology who specializes in
