Faculty Members and Coaches in Pennsylvania System Vote to Authorize Strike

Professors and coaches at the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education have voted to authorize their union leaders to call a strike, should the leaders deem such a job action necessary, the Associated Press reported. The contract between the system and the union, which represents 5,500 faculty members and 300 coaches, is set to expire on June 30, and the strike-authorization vote gives the union a means to escalate its tactics if bargaining efforts for a new contract break down. The AP reported that neither the professors nor the coaches had ever walked off the job. —John Gravois
