Faculty Member's Concern Prompts Arrest of U. of Southern Mississippi Student

A 25-year-old student at the University of Southern Mississippi was arrested on Wednesday after a faculty member told the university police that the student had posted an unspecified threat on the social-network site MySpace.

According to the Hattiesburg American, Charles Wanwright was being held in the Forrest County Jail. He has not been charged, but was believed to own guns. The university sent an all-campus e-mail message about the arrest, and posted a notice on its Web site.

“Our critical-incident response system was successful in this case,” said the university’s vice president for student affairs, Joe Paul, in the statement. “It worked because a member of the campus community came forward with information that we were able to assess and then act upon. We want our faculty, staff, and students to come forward any time they feel the need.” —Lawrence Biemiller
