Classes have been postponed, yet again, because of a faculty lockout at St. Thomas University, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In a written statement, Michael W. Higgins, president of the Canadian university, said classes would now be delayed until at least Monday instead of starting on Thursday.
The 2,800-student university took the unprecedented step of locking out the faculty during the Christmas break. The two sides have been negotiating for 10 months over salaries, teaching loads, and other issues. The faculty union held a strike vote on Monday, and more than three-quarters of full-timers and 80 percent of part-timers backed a walkout.
There’s some confusion over when the two sides will resume talking. A Fredericton newspaper, The Daily Gleaner said they would sit down today, but the CBC said they wouldn’t talk until Thursday. —Karen Birchard
