A budget crisis at Southern Oregon University may require the elimination of academic programs and the dismissal of tenure faculty members, according to the Mail Tribune, a newspaper in southern Oregon. The dismal news was delivered in a speech on Monday by the university’s president, Mary Cullinan, who said that a drop in enrollment had resulted in a budget gap that the university closed only by tapping its reserves. She said such a practice was not sustainable. After a public-comment period, she said, the university would consider declaring a state of financial exigency, which would allow cuts and layoffs. Faculty members quoted by the newspaper said they appreciated her willingness to involve professors in dealing with the crisis.
