Oregon Health and Science University has announced that it will eliminate 200 to 300 jobs because of an estimated $30-million budget shortfall.
The university attributes its financial woes to an Oregon Supreme Court ruling in December that effectively eliminated caps on payments made by public organizations in liability cases. The university’s insurance costs will increase from $7.6-million a year to $36.6-million a year, said Jim Newman, a university spokesman.
The university may also close or revamp its dental clinic for the indigent, scale back its engineering program, and eliminate some research centers, among other things. —Andrea L. Foster
