Faced With Enrollment Crunch, Many Colleges Shut the Back Door
Flagship public universities are forced to phase out second-tier admissions
Jill Bryant applied to one college last year: Ohio State University at Columbus. Her two sisters are both happily enrolled there, and she liked the anonymity of a large campus. But with a C average in high school and an ACT score of 17 out of a possible 36, she failed to impress the admissions office.
