Extra Expenses for Graduate Students

To the Editor:

As a graduate teaching assistant, I was glad to read about the introduction of the new American Federation of Teachers standards ("Faculty Union Calls for Better Treatment of Graduate Assistants," The Chronicle, October 22). Piper Fogg, your reporter, provides a good prospective on the new standards as they are written, but I feel that the standards address some issues only indirectly.

For instance, there is a comment that salary should cover living costs. It is
