Dolores Cross, a former president of the struggling Morris Brown College, pleaded guilty today to charges relating to a financial-aid fraud scheme stemming from her time at the college, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced today.
A 34-count federal indictment had alleged that Ms. Cross, who was president of the college from 1999 to 2002, and her former student-aid director, Parvesh Singh, used false pretenses to obtain millions of dollars in federal student loans and grants. The money was used to cover the college’s expenses, which increased sharply under Ms. Cross, in part to pay for personal trips taken by her and her family and friends, the indictment said (I>The Chronicle, December 10, 2004).
Morris Brown, which lost its accreditation after Ms. Cross’s departure (I>The Chronicle, January 17, 2003), now enrolls fewer than 50 students.
