Europe and the United States, Facing Off Across the Atlantic

Andrei S. Markovits's view of Europe is at least as simplistic as the view of America that he ascribes to Europeans ("Western Europe's America Problem," The Chronicle Review, January 19). Anti-Americanism is a convenient shorthand expression that makes serious discussion of issues difficult. ...

I cannot recognize in his essay the wide range of attitudes toward the United States that I have encountered in Europe, including — to name just
