A 20-year-old Ethiopian student at Utah Valley State College is being held on weapons charges after his housemates told police he was stockpiling guns and ammunition.
The student, Kidus Chane Yohannes, was arrested on Saturday in Orem, Utah, according to the Associated Press. He was charged with giving false information for a background check required to purchase two assault rifles, as well as with having stolen a credit card from one of his housemates. When police searched the apartment and Mr. Yohannes’s car, they found ammunition, gun parts, and drawings for AK-47 assault rifles.
Police officers in Provo said they had recently arrested Mr. Yohannes on a firearms charge involving a Yugoslavian SRS rifle that they suspected might have been converted from semiautomatic to automatic operation. But that charge was dismissed in a plea bargain. Mr. Yohannes was on probation when he was arrested on Saturday. —Lawrence Biemiller
