Espousing Freedom Word by Word in Cairo
Those of us who teach writing at the American University in Cairo often feel as if we offer our students not just better English skills, but access to the golden world of the West and its relative freedom from religious, tribal, and territorial strife. The university's writing center is a bridge between East and West, and students come to us to gain entry to the global souk, where the buying and selling takes place in English.
But sometimes I wonder if we are only fooling ourselves.
