Entertainment Industries Ask Colleges to Monitor Local Networks for Piracy
The recording and movie industries' largest trade groups have sent letters to 40 college presidents, asking them to stamp out music and movie piracy on local networks that are not connected to the broader Internet.
The networks — called local-area networks, or LAN's — have sprouted at colleges across the nation in recent years. In essence, LAN's resemble private clubs: Students use them to share music, videos, and software without offering the material to computer
