English Teachers Blast SAT Writing Test

The National Council of Teachers of English said in a report issued this month that the new writing component of the SAT is not an effective way to measure students' writing ability or potential. Worse, said the group, the new SAT may cause high-school English teachers to take time away from high-quality writing instruction, in order to teach "formulaic writing" intended to prepare students for the new test.
