English Students First Build a House, Then Write About the Issues Surrounding It
Two years ago University of Cincinnati student volunteers, under the auspices of Habitat for Humanity, built a first house for a family in one of the low-income neighborhoods near the campus.
Sensing something teachable, the honors program asked the English department to consider creating an honors course around the community-service project. The result was a "persuasive-writing class," as the instructor calls it, now in its second year.
