England, Not America, as Germany's Model
To the Editor:
In Thomas John Hochstettler's essay about Germany's efforts to improve its system of higher education, he states that "reformers have cast a jealous eye across the Atlantic" ("Aspiring to Steeples of Excellence at German Universities," The Chronicle Review, July 30). This may be true as far as creating alumni associations is concerned, but for the introduction of the bachelor's degree, Germany had only to peer across the English Channel to find a model.
