Energy Dept. Questions Safety at Los Alamos Lab

The Department of Energy has issued a preliminary finding that the University of California violated federal rules for nuclear safety at one of the two nuclear-weapons laboratories that it manages for the government.

The violations at Los Alamos National Laboratory occurred at the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Facility and came to light after a fire and an explosion there late in 1996, according to
