Energy Department Will Open Los Alamos Contract to Competition
The U.S. Department of Energy will take bids for the contract to manage the Los Alamos National Laboratory for the first time in the nuclear-weapons lab's history. The University of California system has been its only outside manager since 1943, but recent public lapses in oversight have eroded some key officials' confidence in the institution's stewardship. The university system's contract expires in 2005.
