End of Hazing Case Against U. of Vermont Fraternity Leaders

The Vermont attorney general’s office has decided not to pursue an appeal of a state magistrate’s dismissal of hazing charges against four officers of the Phi Gamma Delta chapter at the University of Vermont, The Burlington Free Press reported. The charges, which were dropped in November, stemmed from a party in March 2006 in which pledges were allegedly taunted with anti-gay language.

Lawyers for the accused fraternity leaders hailed the decision and called on the university to apologize, according to WCAX-TV, a local station. No apology, however, appears to be forthcoming. The university is standing by a suspension it imposed in December after determining that the fraternity had violated the institution’s own policies on hazing and underage drinking. —Charles Huckabee
