Embattled President of Oral Roberts U. Resigns

The president of Oral Roberts University, who has been on leave from the university since allegations of his lavish spending arose last month, has stepped down, the Associated Press reports.

In a lawsuit filed by three former professors at the university, Richard L. Roberts, the son of the evangelical broadcaster Oral Roberts, who founded the university, was accused of spending thousands of dollars on sumptuous living, including shopping trips, vacations, and a stable of horses for the Roberts children. Other allegations concerned Richard Roberts’s wife. The Robertses have consistently denied wrongdoing.

Faculty members at the university issued a vote of no confidence in Richard Roberts last week.

George Pearsons, chairman of the university’s Board of Regents, announced the resignation. The AP reported that the university would not comment on the resignation until next week. —Scott Carlson
