Education Dept. Contractor Mistakenly Tells Students They Won a Federal Fellowship
A mix-up by an Education Department contractor has left 39 humanities students sorely disappointed.
Late last month, the contractor sent letters to the students alerting them that they had won the department's prestigious Jacob K. Javits Fellowships. A few days later, the contractor called the students to tell them that, in fact, they had been chosen as "alternates" who would receive a Javits award only if winners declined it.
