Education Dept. Announces Guidelines for New Student Grant Program
The U.S. Education Department laid out last week broad criteria for determining who is eligible to receive grants this fall through a federal program designed to help academically talented students from low-income families pay for college.
In a telephone briefing for reporters, department officials estimated that about 425,000 students would qualify for the new Academic Competitiveness Grants in the 2006-7 academic year.
Congress created the program as part of the $39-billion
