Education Department Outlines Plans for Management and Student-Aid Improvements
Education Secretary Roderick R. Paige last week announced a plan comprising 140 steps -- many focused on student-aid programs -- to improve the management of his department.
The plan follows a review of problems that had been identified as sources of fraud and waste by the General Accounting Office, the department's inspector general, and outside auditors. For the past several years, Republican lawmakers have criticized the department for not earning a clean audit.
