Editor's Note

In this special issue devoted to community colleges, we take a close look at the institutions often called the "workhorses" and "heavy lifters" of higher education. Community colleges take their students as they come — ready or not — and educate many low-income, adult, and minority students who might not otherwise attend college. The leaders of these campuses come from varied backgrounds, as the adjoining articles on influential and emerging community-college presidents
